Tara Miller
Tara Miller lives with a diagnosis of Schizoaffective Disorder (a form of schizophrenia) and considers herself a psychiatric survivor. She first started experiencing symptoms when she was nineteen years old and a junior at Penn State University. Her illness grew in severity till she was hospitalized multiple times and unable to work or function. However, after many years of fighting, she achieved a new level of stability and recovery and returned to work and completed her master's degree in counseling psychology. She credits her wellness with many years of self-exploration, becoming an advocate, education on mental health, and other wellness tools like exercise, medication, and radical self-care.
Tara has also worked in the mental health field for the past 22 years of her career. She has worked within the system to change the system. She is passionate about ending the stigma for self-injury and understanding non-suicidal self-harm, trauma-informed care, holistic wellness, and more awareness for extreme states such as psychosis. Tara credits journaling, meditation, exercise, a strong support system, and a regular yoga practice with helping her stay well and thriving with her diagnosis.
